Children from the poorest families are the worst affected by government spending cuts, new research has revealed.
The decision of the coalition to reduce funding in a number of public sector areas, as announced in the emergency Budget, was ''regressive'', it has been claimed.
According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, poor families with children are losing out more than any other social demographic as a result.
Fiona Weir, spokeswoman for End Child Poverty, said that the findings went against the government's pledge to end child poverty by 2020.
"It's not fair that children should have to pay for the cuts and shocking that the poorest families are bearing the brunt of them," the spokeswoman added.
"The spending review will need to show clearly how the government will deliver on the commitment to ending child poverty, ensuring that cuts fall on those most able to pay."
As a result of the government spending cuts, a number of child safeguarding organisations have seen their budgets slashed for the coming year.
